Heard It Through the Grapevine

Hello, my name is Josh Howard. I was one of the last draft picks in the 2003 draft, primarily due to the fact that it was well know that I loved to smoke out. Over the next 4 years, I proceeded to grow with a changing Dallas Mavericks team. Eventually we reached the finals, and lost due to our team (myself included) blowing some free throws and the refs bailing out D-Wade.

After that I began to think of myself as a gunner, particularly after a night in Dallas where I almost threw in 50 when Dirk was out. I stopped doing the things that made me a fan favorite. I turned down a chance to participate with the Olympic squad. I started mouthing off into cameras about the national anthem. I began to party more. I was the man! I mean, I signed a 4 year $40 million contract! I could do what I wanted!

Then, after a few more embarassing mishaps, I underwent surgery, a few of them in fact, to deal with nagging injuries. I probably didn’t rehab as well as I should have. I didn’t listen to the coaching staff; I mean I know best. Who cares that I’ve left money sitting on the table not once, but twice in my NBA career (due to the draft drop, then signing with the Mavs before hitting FA) I know what I’m doing.

The Mavs never coddled me, or shielded me from any rumors or critics. I’m that good.

What’s that you say? I went from making the playoffs every year to the bottom rung of the NBA in a week? Yeah, so? What do you mean the Wizards won’t pick up my $11.5 team option on my contract? Ludacris! I am one-time all star Josh Howard. I could’ve been somebody… I mean I am somebody!
