Heard It Through the Grapevine

  • Rick Carlisle, on turning around the offense (via Tim MacMahon): “You’ve got to drive the ball…You’ve got to get fouled and get to the free throw line. Drives set up better 3s. We definitely need to drive the ball more, but we don’t want to run over people. It’s got to be off the right moves and actions, but overall aggressiveness is a must to win in this league, especially against good teams.”
  • J.J. Barea may get the start tonight over Rodrigue Beaubois, who could barely get off the bench (just eight seconds of PT!) against Atlanta. Something tells me the MFFLs, most of whom have been clamoring for more minutes and more opportunities for Beaubois and less of the each for Barea, won’t be too happy about this.
  • What is this ‘new’ points per possession metric Eddie Sefko is talking about? I admire Sefko’s willingness to include more accurate numbers and I understand that he has to dumb things down a bit for the casual sports fan. The fact that PPP is in a major newspaper column is certainly a sign of progress. But to any serious basketball fan with internet access, the notion that points per possession is ‘new’ or ‘trendy’ is good for a chuckle. (Also noteworthy: a Roland Beech mention, who, if you’ll remember, was kind enough to talk with me just prior to the regular season opener.)
  • Apparently the Mark Cuban-SEC storyline isn’t quite wrapped.
