Heard It Through the Grapevine

  • Kelly Dwyer ranked Dirk the 4th best player of the decade. That’s above LeBron, above Wade, above Shaq, and short of only KG, Duncan, and Kobe. Quite the mark of excellence. Jason Kidd also comes in at 7th on that list, an applause-worthy feat even if it’s more of a testament to who he’s been than who he is now.
  • In case you haven’t picked up on it, I won’t be previewing/recapping the preseason games for a variety of reasons. I’ll still drop some relevant notes in these Grapevine posts, but the more formal preview/recap format won’t start up until the regular season does.
  • On that note: the story of the game was the amount of foul calls. There were 64 combined fouls and 92 combined free throw attempts. In a pre-season game. Yeesh. The fouls helped Dirk keep a smiley face in the the points column (23 points, 3-12 FG, 17-19 FT), but they also turned a routine preseason game into a Lord of the Rings screening.
  • The bench also came up big, with four reserves scoring double figures for the Mavs (Gooden 18, Barea 17, Terry 13, Humphries 10). That’ll do, pigs, that’ll do.
  • Not everyone loves Wayne Winston’s statistical work (warning: this is not for those uninitiated into the world of ABPR).
  • Shawn Marion sat out last night’s game with a minor right calf injury, and is probable for Friday. Josh Howard on the other hand won’t be playing until later in the pre-season.

I’d just like to point out that I do like Wayne’s work, but that I’d like it more if he used points per possession instead of per minute. :)

@Ryan: Duly noted. Let the record show that Ryan only kind of hates Winston for using points per minute.

I love my Dirk, but having him ahead of Shaq is nothing short of insane.
