  • Avery Johnson is no longer in the running to be the head coach of the Pistons.  I’m incredibly sympathetic.
  • The Avery-less Pistons also have some interest in Brandon Bass, apparently.  If Bass is looking for playing time, I’m not sure the place is behind Charlie Villanueva and Jason Maxiell.
  • Marcin Gortat, via Tim Povtak of FanHouse: “I think I’m ready to be a starting lineup guy…I’ll have to fight for that spot, but Dallas has all the pieces. Jason Kidd is a great point guard. Dirk Nowitzki is the best power forward in the game, and I just want to help them win.”  (Emphasis mine.) Oh Marcin, you shouldn’t have!

    The Dirk fan comment by Gortat might be a throwaway or even something like humorous to many people, but I have to wonder if having a fellow player who REALLY respects his game as so many can’t (read: another Euro big) might bolster Dirk’s confidence/arrogance a bit.

    He’s seemed to me in recent seasons to grow ever-more-mortal while not quite losing his preeminence as possibly the most difficult cover in the league. I’d like to see him see himself as a superhero like all the American guys do.

    Kind of glad Avery isn’t getting the Pistons job. Not really the right match, imo. Detroit really seems to be in transition, and Avery really seems to work better with an established core more on the upswing. I’m sure there will be vacancies next season for him to think over.
